She is among 1,058 picked from 200,000 candidates for the £4billion Mars One Project – the one way trip to Mars planned to launch years to come.
The former welder, of Hull, said she “couldn’t believe” she had a chance of being among the 24 who would get to build and inhabit the first settlement on the Red Planet.
Melissa, who was born Leslie, said: “There were so many people who were academics or studying space travel. I’d love to make history as the first transgender person to go to Mars.”
If she gets selected well I personally wish her the very best of luck – a one way ticket to Mars isn’t my idea of a good time, but all the same I’ve a lot of respect and admiration for the people who are putting themselves forward to take the trip. It certainly is a new take on the phrase “My journey started …”
