So we are leaving the European Union, I personally voted to remain and personally think we are better working to fix something less than ideal than leave something simply because ‘the majority’ of people in the England have had enough about liberal ideas on integration.
Living in the North of England I have always felt an air of, how can I say two faced about liberalism, a certain smile to your face and call you fit to burn behind your back. An attitude that is inward looking and isolating, not integrating and open. Being a trans person I have felt that attitude and experienced it in one way or another, I don’t know, maybe yes I’m hyper aware of atmospheres like that but all the same.
Yesterday the people have voted out, I personally find that scary, not specifically because of the economic fall out, or the uncertainty or even the way the country may become very disapproving of immigrants or people with differences. No, I’m scared because of the crazy hypocrisy people seem to have about Europe, for instance.
A man yesterday had just been to collect his Italian take away with his French Stella Artois in hand, a punnet of British Strawberries picked by EU migrants, he then gets into his German VW Golf, a car plastered with Vote Leave stickers, and shouts to his friend across the street “F**K Europe bunch of dickheads!” On hearing this I soon realised that maybe some people haven’t really thought this whole thing through?
The politicians today who backed the vote leave campaign may be talking about an open and liberal Britain, one that’s inclusive and acceptant of diversity, sadly however I don’t think they truly appreciate the real battle they have on their hands. Some people will continue to blindly walk down the road of exclusion, all the while enjoying the diversity brought by a more inclusive Europe. It wasn’t that many years ago that people with less than perfectly white skin were being hounded and beaten, it wasn’t that long ago that anyone homosexual were being treated the same, it wasn’t that long ago same sex marriage was derided as being obscene and for some these attitudes still remain today.
Just because politicians have made changes doesn’t mean the sea of popular opinion has moved, we are indeed a very tolerant nation, but the tolerance I fear has just started to run out with this vote to leave. The old ways maybe are starting to rear their ugly head again … sadly the old ways will not wash in a world of globalisation.
It remains to be seen, all I hope is we really do make a new Great Britain and as a nation we truly work towards the belief we are all better working together and being acceptant rather than being apart and inward looking.
